VoiceTAP (what’s VoiceTAP?) experts for the call on Shri Ram College of Commerce were Arpana Chaturvedi (currently a first year MBA student) and Lohit Agarwal (currently an intern at Ernst & Young). Both of them studied B. Com. at SRCC and have now graduated from there. Listen to what they have to say about their alma mater.

Basic Information
Shri Ram College of Commerce, more commonly referred to as SRCC, is considered to be the premier institute in India for B. Com. (Hons) and BA Eco (Hons) courses. Those are the only courses that the college has at the undergraduate level, but it’s well-known for that itself. There are post graduate courses in a few subjects, but we won’t go into that now.
SRCC is a North Campus college situated in Guru Tegh Bahadur Marg, North Delhi. Their official website is www.srcc.edu and they can be reached on phone at 011-27667905, 27666519. A history of the college is available here. Approximately 384 seats are available for B. Com. (Hons), and 94 seats for BA Eco (Hons). Out of these a majority of the seats are bagged by outstation candidates.
Entry Requirements
Admission cutoffs at SRCC are often termed as ‘ridiculously’ high. Last year for instance the cutoff was around 94.75%. Best of four subjects from a candidate’s class 12th Board marks are considered – out of which English and Maths are subjects have to be included when you’re mentioning your four subjects. Students from science and arts stream are in tough luck, because for them the cutoff is 1% higher than what it is for commerce stream candidates.
Reserved Category candidates (SC / ST / OBC etc): Candidates from the reserved category need a separate form to apply, not the common DU admission form. Information regarding this would be available at the college itself. There is a relaxation of cutoff percentage for reserved category candidates; for instance, OBC candidates get a 10% relaxation on the cutoff percentage. This step was taken because many seats in OBC category were going empty.
Sports Quota: 20 seats are reserved in SRCC for admission through sports quota. Trials are held and candidates are admitted on the basis of their performance. Certificates / achievements in sports for the past few years are also considered. Again, a separate form needs to be taken from the college itself for admission in the category.
Transfers: Transfer of a student to second year / any other semester is not allowed at SRCC.
Financial support / scholarships: Tuition fees (excluding hostel) are less than Rs 10000 per annum. However for students facing financial hardship and / or meritorious students, there are various scholarships on offer at SRCC.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure at SRCC is top-notch. All classrooms / lecture halls are air-conditioned and outfitted with LCD projectors, screens etc. A 300-seater library provides books and journals to students, along with being one of the first libraries in Delhi University to provide Wi-Fi access. SRCC’s auditorium has a capacity of seating 750 persons, and a modern seminar room is also available. On-campus bank, stationery store, health centre et al are also present. (A significant amount of the funding for all this was provided by SRCC alumni.)
Starting from 2009, all teaching in classrooms will be done with the aid of computers. Students will be expected to have their own laptops – if they don’t have one then it will be provided at subsidised cost and / or with financing options. SRCC aims to make it is whole campus completely Wi-Fi enabled. This is in addition to the computer centres to provide access to the Internet that it already has.
SRCC’s placement cell has a track record of providing guidance and getting students placed at major Indian and multinational companies.
Sports: SRCC is the only North Campus college to have a swimming pool (open during summers only). Facilities are available for badminton, cricket, tennis, table tennis, gym, etc. Further, sports facilities are being upgraded because SRCC is a venue for some events (such as rugby and wrestling) to be held in the 2010 Commonwealth Games Delhi.
Hostel: The colleges provides on-campus hostel facility for both boys and girls (but with a greater number of seats available for boys). Catering, laundry etc are also provided. In case a student doesn’t get a place in the college hostel then s/he can look for paying guest accommodation which is available in the North Campus area.
Cultural / Extra-Curricular Activities
Contrary to what you’d expect after putting in a bunch of ~400 95%+ students in the same place, SRCC students do manage to have fun. There are different societies for dramatics, elocution, Koshish (a social service body), choreography, commerce, economics, maths, computers, debating etc. SRCC also organizes a national lectures series which has eminent personalities attending the event.
Crossroads is SRCC’s annual fest. Spread over four days, various cultural events are held, including music concerts where Indian rock bands such as Parikrama performed.
DCE rock band Arcane Deception playing at SRCC
Politics: National parties such as NSUI and ABVP are not allowed to field external candidates for college student union elections; only SRCC’s own student can participate in elections for SRCC student union. Canvassing for DU student union elections do take place though.
Famous Alumni
Arun Jaitley (BJP spokesperson), Vijay Goel (BJP politician), Gulshan Grover (actor), Rajat Sharma (founder of India TV), Rakeysh Mehra (director of films such as Rang De Basanti and Delhi-6)…to name a few.

I’ve got 98.75% in my best of four. I plan to pursue Economics (H) in DU, but I’m like really confused between SRCC and St.Stephens. So, if anybody could help me in that, it’d be great.
What I basically want is a vibrant student life with extra-curricular opportunities and good placements. Which of the two will be better?
Subhashish,
Firstly – congrats on getting such great grades! Both the options are good ones. My suggestion to you would be to think on the following lines:
- Future career: If you have a defined path that you want to follow, and its one of the Commerce streams (Auditing, Consulting, Banking etc.): Go for SRCC (its a specialized brand in the eyes of the recruiter). St. Stephens also has a great brand name, and frankly – I would be hard pressed to say that St. Stephens does less than well in its placements
- St. Stephens might best SRCC in terms of its overall approach to sports, extra curricular life etc. It has a whole host of societies, which are extremely active – and do very well in DU. . SRCC’s extra curricular life is not bad – but IMHO I think St. Stephens is known for extra curricular while SRCC is known for top placements (in its focused fields)
Bottom line is that no matter what you do – you are in DU, and you will make friends everywhere. If you are in one college, that does not mean that you will not take part in whats happening at Hindu / Hansraj. Think long term, and go for what will add most value to your course.
If you want the best for Eco Hons, while enjoying the DU life – its SRCC.
Hope this helps.
Mrigank
Sure thing dude. I’ll ping you when the Stephen’s / Hindu posts are up. Do spread the word around if you found this useful!
PS – Stephen’s has a huge RKP presence. Depending on whether you want that or don’t want that, this could be a deciding factor in whether you want to join SRCC or Stephen’s.
Mrigank sir..i recently filled all forms for D.U…however even after reading ur comment i am confused betweeen B.Com(Hons.) n Eco.(Hons.)..what r my options after B.Com other than MBA n After Eco(Hons.) other than doing PG frm Delhi school of Economics..
@ Devika,
My brother did Eco (H) from Sri Venkateswara College.
(1) My brother is now doing his MBA from Mumbai
(2) A lot of his friends are doing their Masters from places like London School of Economics and National University of Singapore
(3) Many of his friends are currently working in consultancy firms and all
So, these are the three major career choices after Eco (H).
i have got 90.5% in my best 4.i want to study eco.h frm du…espically frm srcc….plz tell me if there is any eca quota in srcc that i can apply wid so dat my cutoff decreases,,as i am a trained dancer and hav passed th 4th year too.
i am frm science stream wid eco as my 5th sub.Is there any relaxation on me beeing frm science background.
plz reply immediately….i am in a dire need of ur answer.
thankyou.
Unfortunately, there is only a Sports quote in SRCC and no ECA quota as such. And with 90.5, SRCC may be a tad too tough.
There is a relaxation for sciencees, but the cut-off for sciencees will still be around 93%.
That said, you can try check the sites of other colleges for ECA. Be fast! The college deadlines are on the 15th of June.
While this might not be the standard thing said by most people who are in the counselling business, I can say it because I am NOT in the counselling business, and I have an opinion on how you should really be going about making these decisions.
1. Both BCom hons and Eco hons have great potential in the finanicial fields. Students from these courses have gotten into:
- Consulting
- Banking
- Financial services
- Advertising (surprised?) and many more such careers.
- Wealth Management
As I say to most students I meet – the fact that you have a degree from SRCC proves that you have brains. Nothing more than that to the recruiter. It will rarely happen that you know more than the guy who has been working there for a year. However, it will just take you lesser time to pick up what is being put on your plate by the company / job.
2. If you want to continue your education, you can go in for the MBA (though I personally don’t recommend people doing their MBA right after college), as the skill sets you learn will help with that.
An overriding point: Usually, the first job that you will get will be because of your passion, personality and perseverance, not your CV. Focus yourself in a general direction (MBA / Work post college), and enjoy college life post that, while bearing in mind that these two routes would require different steps along the way.
Bottom line: Take your pick – both are equally good options (especially if done from good institutes) for a career in finance related fields.
Mrigank
Subhashish,
Great to have you pitch in! The more help we can get – the better!
Many thanks,
Voicetap team
thank u so much sir..also can u tell me whether i shd do B.Com(Hons.) frm SRCC or Eco.(Hons.) frm St. STephen’s..also what kind of preparation is required for an interview at stephen’s..
Relaxation? Or is it the other way round – with a higher cutoff for science students? That’s what SRCC alumni said in the podcast.
@ Ankur,
Science students get a +2 relaxation for Eco (hons) , i.e. a lower cut-off, but for B.Com, Science students can have a -3% to -4%, i.e. higher cut-offs.
Dear sir…the boards results(ISC and CBSE) have been outstanding this year. This will obviously set the cut offs of most DU colleges sky rocketing. I scored a 95.5% in my top 4. Like most commerce students, I dream of studyin B.Com. @ SRCC. Am I safe?
@ Rahul,
Considering that the cut-off for B.Com (H) at SRCC last year for commerce students was 94%, you are in a fairly comfortable zone, i.e. you have a strong chance of getting the course that you want. More so because SRCC has about 300 seats for B.Com (H), so the cut-off’s for the course does not go too high and has a fair capacity to absorb vagaries in the marking patterns over the years.
So, be relaxed for now.
@ Devika,
Of course, whether you do B.Com (H) from SRCC or Eco (H) from St.Stephens should depend on your aptitude and what exactly do you want to study. I suggest you go to one of the college’s websites and check the course content of the two courses, which should help you to decide which course you should opt for.\
Thank u so much for your reply subhashish sir…i just wanted to ask one more thing, though not sure if you could really comment on this! My preliminary application form had reached SRCC through courier on 8th June but I haven’t recieved the acknowledgement slip from the college till today(15 june). Is there something wrong?
@ Rahul,
First up, I am seeking my admission to DU this year myself, so please don’t refer to me as “sir”.
The next point is that the SRCC site says that you will get your acknowledgement slip.
Did you send a self-addressed envelope of the prescribed size?
There is nothing to panic (maybe they sent it by regular post), but if you can, you should try to call them up and maybe ask them. I hope you have the form number. You can quote it and ask them if they’ve received it and tell them your exact problem.
How can I have the form number? The form did have a space where one had to fill in the form no. but then that is supposed to be filled by the college itself, isin’t it? And the college had asked to enclose a ‘self attested photocopy’ of class 12 marksheet but I have given one which has my signature and has also been attested by the principal of the school I last attended? Could that pose as a problem?
Also, I have submitted a self addressed envelope of size 9*3..
@ Rahul,
Okay, actually I took the form from the college so perhaps that is how I had my form number.
No, the marksheet will not be a problem, for sure.
If you put in a self-addressed envelope, then perhaps it is just a delay by either their clerks or the postal system.
That said, I know this is a nervous time for you, so you could call them up to ask them how much time it takes and all. There is no harm in calling them, be rest assured.
I’ve been trying to get in touch with them but the response is very poor! Telephone calls are hardly picked up! I’m from Calcutta so i really don’t know how the admission procedure there works..Which is just want is getting me tensed so much..I’d applied in St. Stephen’s as well and have recieved the ack. slip from there…
@ Rahul,
I am from Calcutta too, by the way. You can add me on gmail at olympia.hades@gmail.com if you want to.
I guess, in your case, you just try to get across to them. I guess none of us can be much help in that case.
But maybe it’ll reach you soon. Have you applied to any other college from DU ?
Only in St. Stephen’s for BA hons. Eco and in SRCC for eco n B.Com….So u had gone 2 delhi to fill your application forms? Where all have u applied?
I have applied only to Stephens, SRCC and Hansraj – all three only for Economics.
Ok..nice..From which stream arey you? Give me your yahoo id, if you have one!
@ Rahul,
I am from the science stream. You could add me at olympia.hades@yahoo.co.in.
Dear Voicetap team,
I’m a student from Pune. I’d like to know if there are any rumoured cut-offs for St. Stephens or for SRCC this year, as yet. Will they remain the same or considering the amazing results this year, are they expected to increase?
Thanks!
By this time, the St. Stephens cut-off’s have been announced, and as expected, the cut-off’s have risen stupendouly.
So, expect a 1% jump in popular courses.
i have passed my isc with a 93.75% and am from the commerce stream.do i stand a chance to make it to srcc, specially this year?Do they take out a second list? What are my chances of entering some of the other du colleges like lsr?
@ Mahasweta,
Unfortunately, with 93.75% in commerce, you are unlikely to make it to SRCC since SRCC generally does not come out with a second list.
It is hard to comment about LSR, or even Hansraj and Venkateswara, given the fact that cut-off’s are expected to rise.
hey dude can u plz lemme know bout d hostel facilities in srcc…. n also dat v have to fill d hostel form wid d application form or after d admission is confirmed in whc ever college…. thnks in advance….
@ Kathy,
Except for St. Stephens, most colleges require you to fill the hostel forms after you get admission into the college (I have personally asked SRCC and Hansraj, and I suppose that the rest of the colleges follow a similar system)
i badly need help…. i score only 80% in 12th Bord , i want to study in DU . what to do now ???
@ Samudra,
You must have filled your forms for DU, didn’t you? Which colleges and courses have you applied for?
My best four is 93.75% so do i have any fair chances of getting LSR for economics honours……….and which other good colleges can i hope for this course…….please reply….
@ Nidhi,
Since you have not mentioned your stream, 93.75% in commerce will make it quite tough for you to get Eco (H) at LSR, SRCC, Hanraj or Venkateswara. But if your stream is science, you have a strong chance at Hansraj, Vekateswara and LSR,and a fair chance at SRCC.
i hve got 95.75% in best 4…i want 2 do b.com hns frm srcc…will i qualify?…also in all subjects my% is 96.20%… but i guess du considers best 4 only…how safe am i?
@ Kartik,
If you are a commercee, you’re well on your way to B.Com in SRCC, given that the cut-off last year was 94%.
but why is it so.i mean i checked the last year’s cut off and according to it i qualify all the colleges except srcc and stephens at 93.75 in commerce….i wanted some consolation but u depressed me ……..
Ladies, Gentlemen, Parents and everyone else who comes to this forum:
I just wanted to make a few things clear, and also wanted to provide a perspective which is fairly important when it comes to thinking about what is good / right / wrong / best, and I will do it with my own story.
I didnt want to do engineering. I didnt appear for any entrance exams – not one. My father saw me spending my time at DU and said – admissions on for engineering at Nagpur – so go. I went, and my way of deciding what course to get into was based on what the guy ahead in my line was saying, and what the guy behind me was talking about. In 20 mins, I decided my course, and took it. Radically different from the way you guys are thinking about your courses and careers.
I went on to complete my engineering from Nagpur – and started working. Various careers, but mainly client facing. Export sales in Indonesia, Public relations in India, everything at a startup, and finally ended up at Reliance Infocomm (when they were launching). Spent a great time there – learnt a lot, and then realized that to break the ‘glass ceiling’, one needs that extra push. I went in for my MBA 7 years into work. I got into the B School that I wanted – INSEAD, and spent a lovely year there getting to know what I had always wanted to know.
Almost 4 years out of INSEAD now – and I am back in India – trying to setup a service which helps you and your parents in understanding the nuances involved with various elements / careers, and most importantly making and INFORMED CHOICE. This is not a service for consolation. It is a service which has been started by someone who believes in his own power. I didnt get 93% in the 12th, and yet I think I have done alright. You guys HAVE got 93% and above – so dont fret about these “small things” in life. SRCC, St. Stephens, Hansraj etc. All are great colleges. At the end of the day – you get a degree from Delhi University.
Much bigger things await you. You have demonstrated what you can achieve, and no matter what life throws your way, you should be able to score a goal. I know – I’ve been there. There are cases of a Dyal singh guy making it in business, but a stephanian failing. Why is that? Because of the person himself. Not because of the college.
My humble submission to all of you would be: Take the best that is in your reach. Try your best, but remember – this is but ONE of the various steps in your life. An important step? Yes. THE ONLY STEP? Not by a far shot.
Apologies for rambling – but I have been noticing these posts for sometime now, and I just wanted to give in my 0.02 cents worth. Just to put things into perspective.

inspiring story ……. mrigank sir
Well, my brother told me once that whichever institute you go to helps you maybe for your first placement, after that how much you grow depends on how you perform.
See, the cut-off’s are expected to rise this year, but they might not rise for commerce students. So, just hope for the best. But then, even if you go to say Kirori Mal, what matters is how you perform in your university, isn’t it?
hey m studying in chandigarh right now..i m in 12th grade and i had a question regarding the subjects is it compulsory to have maths…??
In order to get admission in SRCC, B.COM(hon)???
@Gazal,
Not to be included in the best of four, but check if there is a minumum percentage for Maths in B.Com (H). For Eco (H), a min. of 80 is reqd.
what if i dont have maths???
I’m not sure in that case …
it was really inspiring and motivating….mrigank sir
well…anyways you are right lets see what happens not many days left for the cut off………by the way congratulations for your wonderful result and hope your interview at stephens must have went good….thanks for your advise and all the best for your future
@ Nidhi,
Best of luck to you too !
